About Naha

Naha City, the prefectural capital, is located in the southern portion of the main island of Okinawa. "Shuri," the old capital, is dotted with spots that have pronounced remnants of history, culture, and more. These spots include the ruins of Shurijo Castle (a World Heritage site), as well as aspects such as historical landmarks and stone- paved roads that remind one of days past, awamori (Okinawan liquor) breweries, and workshops for Bingata (an Okinawan dying method). In addition, with the development of commerce centered on the Shintoshin District and a harbor facing the East China Sea in the west, the city also serves the role of being the Okinawa main island's entrance from the sky and sea.
There are also events that Okinawa can boast to the world, including the Naha Giant Tug of War (recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records in 1995), as well as the "Naha Hari" [Dragon Boat Race] (held to pray for things such as a bountiful catch and safe seas) and the "Naha Marathon," a marathon for the citizens that is notable for the volume of support offered on the roadside.
Naha is the center of Okinawa's politics, economics, and culture, in addition to being a spot where history and culture are alive.
