It is into this setting of of Amami Oshima, with its rich culture and unique history, surrounded by deep forests and the deep blue ocean, that Suzu (14) is born. She first learns to have deep feelings for student teacher Mr. Watari. Her chest pounds like the sound of a weaving loom. Her grandmother sees Suzu like this and says “you’re in love”. This film shows how this pure, young girl grows through her first experience with love. It is a fantasy love story.
Amami Oshima is located virtually in between Okinawa and Kagoshima Prefectures, and has a population of 65,000 people spread across its one city, two towns and two villages. Rich in nature, it is referred to as the Galapagos of the Orient, and has many indigenous species such as the Amami rabbit and the Lidth’s jay. Recently the island has been working towards registration as a world natural heritage site.
The island also has a number of traditions which have been handed down from ancient times, including their Oshima pongee cloths, island poems, and August Dance, and includes a number of things which have been designated as Important Intangible Cultural Properties in Japan, such as Hirase Mankai and Shodon Shibaya etc.
