Sakurazaka Film University

At one of our venues, the Sakurazaka Theater, under the banner of the "Sakurazaka Film University", entertainers become guest lecturers for special screenings that allow the viewer to learn about movies from a variety of different angles.
Special lecturers with a deep understanding of the movie are invited, and through live commentary and on-stage greetings, a new way of enjoying the film emerges.
This time we plan to screen 11 films, and have invited special lecturers as Tsutomu Sekine, Yuki Saito, Kankuro Kudo, Tomohiro Machiyama, Kon Arimura and Tsukasa Kotobuki.

This is a suspense drama that depicts a young girl who grows up as an orphan surrounded by two men, becomes mixed up in a murder, and turns into an adult. It was the first main film role for Yuki Saito, who was enjoying popularity at the time as a young star. She also sang the main theme, “Jonetsu” (passion). Another highlight is the unique atmosphere, which shines with the ability of Director Shinji Somai (“Typhoon Club”), displaying such elements as a long take at the beginning.

This film is Tsuyoshi Kusanagi’s first credit for original scriptwriting! A unique group of many cast members, which you can’t find anywhere else, has gathered as well! Storyline

Storyline

This is the directorial debut for Juzo Yamasaki, the creator of the nationally popular manga "Tsuribaka Nisshi" (Fishing Fool's Diary). The story takes place in Miyazaki, Yamasaki's hometown, and is a human comedy that tells the heartwarming tale of three middle-aged men who have formed a group called "Asahiruban." Their lives are past the halfway point, but they are still feeling lost. The men struggle to take back the lost family bonds for a lady they adored during their high school baseball years, as well as her daughter. Highlights of the film include scenes that resemble "Tsuribaka Nisshi," such as a fishing showdown between the main character Asa (Jun Kunimura) and his former teacher (Toshiyuki Nishida).
